During the Gilded Age, Newport would evolved into a major center for African American owned and operated businesses, many that provided vital transportation, hospitality, food, contracting and personal services for the well-heeled summer vacationer. These African heritage entrepreneurs would parlay their earnings to provide for a comfortable life for their own families and during their own time for play and recreation, take part in Newport’s many civic offerings.
